Feel the Magic of Aretha Franklin Live: All Hail the Queen!

When it comes to honoring musical legends, there is no name more powerful than Aretha Franklin. Created in 2018, "All Hail the Queen: Tribute to Aretha Franklin" originally began as a tribute to another phenomenal vocalist, Whitney Houston. However, when the Queen of Soul passed away, we were asked to pivot and celebrate the vast, unparalleled catalog she amassed over her illustrious career.

As we built the show, we were overwhelmed by the sheer number of hits she had. Narrowing down the selections was a delightful challenge, and it’s no surprise that after every performance, patrons ask for more or have specific song requests they want added. With a runtime of one hour and fifteen minutes, and no intermission, we created several mashups and medleys to feature as many songs as possible. We even captured her breathtaking rendition of "Nessun Dorma," originally performed when Ms. Franklin covered for opera king Luciano Pavarotti.

Highlighting Aretha’s foundation in music, we emphasize her gospel roots, taking inspiration from her legendary gospel album, "Amazing Grace." Our gospel medley incorporates staple gospel songs, creating a true tribute that engages and educates our audience. Throughout the performance, we share stories and pivotal moments from Aretha Franklin's life, representing her musicality and artistic genius while showcasing our own creativity and talent.

Aretha Franklin's contributions to music and culture are timeless. Her powerful voice and unforgettable songs continue to inspire generations, and it’s important to keep her legacy alive. Developing this show meant diving into the life and experiences of Aretha Franklin. We learned fascinating new information and historical facts that shaped her as an artist and influenced the creation of her most notable hits. As we discovered her music, we also found parallels with our own life experiences as a band and independent artists, bringing an authentic emotional connection to our performances.

This show has grown into a polished, powerhouse performance. We’ve had the pleasure of performing on stages across Chicago, including the DuSable Museum, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, Madison Street Theater, Freedom Hall, and the iconic Epiphany Center for the Arts, where we will return for the third time. The Epiphany Center is a special gem in Chicago, formerly the Church of the Epiphany, where slain Black Panther Fred Hampton’s memorial took place. We’ve also taken our show on the road, sharing this phenomenal performance with audiences in St. Louis, Missouri, and Columbus, Ohio.

The McNary Experience, an 8-piece Chicago-based band, includes a drummer, pianist, bassist, guitarist, saxophonist, two background vocalists, and lead singer Qiana McNary-Licorish. Qiana's powerful, classically trained voice is rich with deep texture, tremendously versatile, and emotive.
