Burnham Greenway Trail System

Cal-Sag Trail

Once completed, the Cal-Sag Trail will stretch 26 miles from Sag Quarries in Lemont to the Burnham Greenway near the Indiana border. As of now, 13 miles are open, passing through communities such as Alsip, Blue Island, Calumet City, Dolton, Palos Heights, and Riverdale. The trail runs alongside the Cal-Sag Channel, offering scenic water views and access to various natural areas.

Dan Ryan Woods

Located on Chicago's South Side, the Dan Ryan Woods feature a network of trails that traverse rolling hills, woodlands, and open spaces. The preserve is one of the few areas in Chicago with significant elevation changes, offering a more challenging hike for those seeking it. Eggers Grove

Situated in the East Side neighborhood of Chicago, Eggers Grove offers trails that wind through wetlands, woodlands, and prairies. Major Taylor Trail

Named after the celebrated African American cyclist Marshall "Major" Taylor, this 7.6-mile paved trail stretches from Dan Ryan Woods to Whistler Woods. Passing through several South Side neighborhoods, the trail offers a mix of urban and natural scenery, celebrating both the area's cultural heritage and natural beauty.

Oak Forest Heritage Preserve

The Oak Forest Heritage Preserve Loop is a 2.0-mile trail near Oak Forest, Illinois. Generally considered an easy route, it's popular for birding and running, offering a peaceful setting amidst natural landscapes.

Sand Ridge Nature Center Trails

Situated in South Holland, the Sand Ridge Nature Center provides several unpaved trails that meander through oak savannas, prairies, and wetlands. The center offers educational exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the area, making it a great destination for families and those interested in learning more about the local environment.

Thorn Creek Trail System

Located in the southern part of Cook County, the Thorn Creek Trail System boasts nearly 23 miles of both paved and unpaved trails. The trail system connects several communities, such as Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Lansing, Lynwood, Park Forest, and South Holland. Tinley Creek Trail System

The Tinley Creek Trail System features three paved loops that guide visitors over gently rolling hills, through prairies and forests, and alongside wetlands and ravines. Spanning areas such as Markham, Midlothian, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Palos Heights, and Tinley Park, these trails offer a variety of scenic experiences suitable for all skill levels.

Vollmer Road Grove Loop

Located near Country Club Hills, the Vollmer Road Grove features a 3.6-mile paved loop trail that winds through woodlands and open fields. The trail is suitable for all skill levels and is accessible year-round, making it a favorite spot for walking, running, and enjoying wildflowers during the blooming season.

Whistler Woods

Found in Riverdale, Whistler Woods offers trails that pass through mature forests and open fields. The preserve is adjacent to the Major Taylor Trail, providing extended hiking opportunities and highlighting the area's cultural heritage.
