Raising Awareness of Health Disparities in the Black Community

Feb 20, 2025

Health disparities are differences in health that happen because not everyone has the same access to support and resources. Achieving better physical and mental health in the Black community is possible when certain barriers around access and cost are eliminated.

Here are a few ways to combat the effects of health disparities for better health outcomes:

  • Seek culturally sensitive healthcare – Historically, Black patients have not always received the same quality of care as others. There are now doctors available who have been trained to understand cultural differences. Your healthcare environment should offer respectful, personalized care no matter your background.
  • Use offered support – There are perks to your healthcare coverage, however you must empower yourself to look into what’s available. Free services for grocery delivery and transportation can be utilized to your advantage.
  • Find community – From produce giveaways to free laundry days, community members across Chicagoland can benefit from Aetna Better Health of Illinois’s in-neighborhood events for no-cost support in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

FREE LAUNDRY: On February 24th, Aetna Better Health of Illinois will offer free laundry to the southside of Chicago at Your Neighborhood Laundromat, 160 W. 79th Street, Chicago, IL 60620 from 10 AM – 2 PM.
